Teton Valley Composite is under the umbrella of the Idaho Interscholastic Cycling League (IICL) of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA). Second to having fun, our goal is to encourage student-athletes to develop a love for mountain biking and become lifelong riders!

NICA has developed four different programs which we incorporate to some degree during every season. From longer Saturday Adventure Rides where student-athletes learn to fuel, manage energy, and ride longer distances, to GRiT Ice Cream Socials, Trail work in partnership with Mountain Bike the Tetons, and our fall race series, there is something for every student-athlete.

Attendance Expectations

Attendance is expected, but not required. Showing up regularly to practice helps student-athletes develop as riders, gain the most from their participation on the team, and build relationships with their coaches and teammates. We understand that summers are busy for everyone!

Checking in on TeamSnap is mandatory, however, as we need to know how many riders will be present at each practice so we can have the proper coach to rider ratio in each ride group.  Ride groups will be sent out on the day of practice around 4 pm. If your student-athlete is not in a ride group please don't bring them to practice.

Do I have to race?  Racing is not required, but often once a kid decides to try one race, they're hooked!  If they're unsure of racing, but want to give it a try, the Grand Targhee race is a great starting point (this year it's September 12th).

Required Equipment

To participate with TVC all riders should have the following at every practice:

A mountain bike in good working condition
Helmet
Closed-toe shoes
Spare tube
Mini-pump
Water
Jacket
Gloves and eye protection are strongly recommended.
 
Each rider is responsible for maintaining his or her own mountain bike. We encourage every rider to establish a relationship with a local bike shop for bike tunes, equipment maintenance, and questions. Many local shops offer discounts to team members for equipment and repairs.

Please let the head coaches know if you need help finding and/or purchasing a bike.

Team Uniform

Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors this year, each rider will be provided with a trail style race jersey!!  That's a $55 value! If your student athlete prefers the Pro style jersey, you can cover the difference between the two or purchase an additional jersey when our store opens.

We will place the order for the team jersey before (date TBD for 2026) (so make sure we have your desired size!), and our store will open around that time if you would like to order shorts, long sleeves, socks, etc.  Production takes 4-6 weeks after the store closes, so expect your order after that time.  Orders you place will be shipped to the address you specify, while the team jerseys will be distributed at practice when they come in.

Student athletes who plan to race must have a matching team jersey to race at league events.  This season, you may select either the Pro, Continental, or Trail Jersey.  Racers can choose from the team bib, lycra or baggy shorts or wear your own favorite shorts.

The team will also be providing practice jerseys to all student athletes who have registered by the end of May, after that date they will be available as supply allows. We prefer athletes to wear these to practices to both create visibility on the trails and show love to our sponsors who make so much of this possible!

All other items in the store are optional.

Participation Fees

Mountain biking is an inherently expensive sport, but we work hard with our sponsors to keep our fees as reasonable as possible. We are not a sanctioned high school sport, so the cost is picked up by team members and their parents.

The cost to participate in TVC is broken down below:

Total Season Fees: $405 + Race Fees (racing is optional)

TVC Team $175 Registration Fee (Required, only 2 kids per family pay), after May 31, 2026 the registration fee jumps to $200 per student athlete or $400 for two or more.

These fees cover:
Team Expenses - league fee, NFS permit, website hosting, TeamSnap subscription
Coach training expenses not covered by the IICL
First aid equipment & supplies
Coach jerseys
Race day support
Student-athlete scholarships
Team equipment
Year-End Banquet & Awards

$180 IICL Membership Fee & $50 NICA National Fee (plus a new $5/athlete Technology Fee) (Required)

This is a required fee and players are not considered practice-ready until it is paid. League fees are paid in Pitzone and cover:
Coach licensing
Coach training
Day to day operations of the league
Insurance

Individual Race Registration

Option 1: Season Pass (Includes Registration for all 5 Races)

High School: $150
Middle School: $125

Season Pass pricing is available for anyone that registers for 5 races at one time and the discount is automatically applied during checkout in the Pit Zone. Discount will not be applied if race registration occurs in multiple transactions.  Available starting 4/1/26

Option 2: Individual Race Registration: (ONLY REQUIRED IF SEASON PASS WAS NOT PURCHASED)

High School: $50/race
Middle School: $45/race

Individual race pricing is applicable when less than 5 races are selected during the registration process. Available starting 4/1/26 REGISTRATION FOR RACE #1 AND #2 WILL CLOSE ON THE MONDAY TWO WEEKS PRIOR TO EACH RACE AT MIDNIGHT.  ALL OTHER RACES REGISTRATION WILL CLOSE ON THE MONDAY OF THE SAME WEEK PRIOR AT MIDNIGHT ONSITE REGISTRATION FOR RACES WILL INCUR A $25 LATE FEE IN ADDITION TO THE INDIVIDUAL RACE ENTRY FEE.

Pre-Season Activities

Pre-Season activities begin the first Monday in June. We practice every Monday from 5:30 - 7:30pm at Sherman Park in Victor.
 
Goals for Pre-Season include:

Bikes checked out and in good riding condition
Bike Park Maintenance & clean up
Teach and refresh fundamental skills
Determine ride groups & set goals
Get ready to ride dirt!

These activities are essential for our coaching staff to evaluate each student-athlete's skills, fitness, and current level of abilities so we can sort the team into appropriate ride groups for trail riding.  Please try to arrive 10 minutes early.

Question 8

Regular Season Practices

Regular Season Practices begin in July and run through the entire season until the final race in October.

Race Specific Practices take place starting in August. Mass starts, passing, and close-quarter riding can be intimidating for beginning racers and we want to make sure those that plan to race feel prepared! During August a few of our practices are back at Sherman Park to learn and practice race-specific techniques.

Ultimately, if you want to race we will make sure you are ready! If your goal is just to finish your first race, we’ll give you the same amount of support as if you’re riding to stand on top of the podium.

Race Info & Dates

The IICL Race Series takes place in the fall. These are youth-specific events at venues across the state, and they are fun! It is not required that student athletes race, and there are no requirements to the number of races you can choose to do.  One race, five races or none at all - it's up to you to choose!  But we see it every year, once a rider decides to do one race, they're hooked!

Student athletes can pre-ride the course on Friday night or Saturday morning, and racing usually begins around 9am. Student athletes are divided by grade in Middle School and Varsity, JV1, JV2, and Freshman in High School.

Families usually choose to camp together as a team, and camping is normally found near the race venue.  A shuttle is often provided for transportation from the campground to the venue.  Both campers and tents are acceptable.  Some families choose to stay in a hotel if there is one nearby.
